What is inspiration? How can we stay inspired? How can we move past blocks?
Inspiration is what excites you and motivates you to do something and in our case to create something! So, how does one get inspired and stay inspired? Creativity has a natural ebb and flow. There will be times you feel super inspired and ready to jump into a project and other times you just might not feel like making anything at all. Fill your inspiration well. You can do this by taking a walk in nature. Take photographs for reference material. Make sketches and doodles in a sketchbook. Cut out images from magazines and paste them into your sketchbook. Create a Pinterest board. Make a list of things you would like to explore or create. Make a list of things you love. These are all jumping off points for creating and when you feel like you are in a lull you can scroll through your Pinterest board, flip through your sketchbook or randomly pick something from one of your lists.
How can you move past blocks and feelings of being unmotivated? The best thing you can do is start making something, anything! Start doodling, squirt some paint on your canvas and move it around, create a simple pattern with your watercolors, sketch your mug of tea. Starting anything is better than doing nothing in this case. Sometimes getting out your art supplies and making yourself make something for 15 minutes is all you need to get going.
We also need to be gentle with ourselves. Who are you creating for? Have you been working on a big project for someone else? Have you been getting ready for a show? Give yourself some down time to rest and relax and then give yourself time to just make something because it is fun. Usually the pressure we put on ourselves is of our own making. What if you could create anything you wanted today? What would it be?
Enjoy the process, seek things that excite you: color, shape, pattern, texture, explore and play, and sprinkle some rest in there and a relaxing walk! You'll find all the inspiration you need! Happy Creating! ~Cecelia
