Starting an art practice needs space. Space to be, think, breathe and create. Have you thought about the space you would need for your art practice?
There is of course the matter of physical space. Where are you going to create? You must make it easy for yourself to sit down and start. This is half the battle of getting going! Set up a table in a spare room with your supplies on it ready to go. Sharing the dining room table? Me too! Put all your art making supplies in a bin or pretty basket ready to pull out when the table is available. Rent a studio space! This is a huge step and may not be in your budget or possible but if you can there is nothing like having your own creative space outside your home. The point is to create a space all your own, even if it is temporary and easily movable like the basket idea.
How about space to think, be and breathe? This is the mental part of starting an art practice. Put away your phone or Ipad, stop scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram overloading your senses and mind with ideas. Give yourself time and space to let your mind wander. Let yourself be present with your art supplies, in your creative space. Take a walk. Walking is proven to help us relax and open our minds. Meditate. Give yourself 5-10 minutes of breathing or a guided meditation. My favorite meditations are the Deepak Chopra guided meditations which can be found https://chopracentermeditation.com/
And of course simply starting to create is a wonderful way to give yourself the space to just be. Precious minutes or maybe your lucky enough to have an hour or two just to get lost in the creative process. This is your creative space. It may feel like a luxury or an indulgence but you need it, you deserve it!
Think about the space you need for your art practice and make it a goal today to cultivate the space you need to be, think, breathe and create! Happy Creating! ~Cecelia
